Go for it Sparky! Don't give up on your dreams. You can look for work along the way. We get alot of drifters thru these parts who make up signs "will work for food" or "hungry for work" and they stand near entrances to shopping marts asking for cash. Some actually find work. You might want to wait til it warms a bit before heading north. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I say you should re-name this post, to include the word failure is only setting yourself up for just that, maybe calling it the Following Your Dream Club, just a thought.

The premise of the club was that everyone has a dream. Most dont acomplish there dream because of fear they will fail. So everyone in the club tries there best to acomplish there dream. Either finish it or fail, even if it means you will fail horribly at it.

Year old pics, old tires on the bike but this is what it looks like with luggage, I could hold more but I was going to the beach in St. Pete. This is when I did the 200mile ride in a day.
The front show's grey. I was working on the body to get it ready for paint and its rough, will be nice and pretty when I do my trip.

Sweet Ride there Sparky.
If you make Central Illinois, I will help your Dream out and get you hooked up with a dry place for the night and a hot meal.
I imagine that the few in the area would also be there to help ensure you make it through the area in one piece.

I guess I didnt think about that, if anyone along the way would offer a place to crash for the night. That would be awesome. Take some pictures and have fun.

Update to my progress towards the trip.
I got both tires replaced, new throttle cable and all the panels reinstalled. Got the Carburetor repaired and running properly. Ordered a Solar USB charger for cell phone, and possibly a GPS unit. Will be ordering a small Tent and Sleeping bag in the next few weeks.
I also have cooking supplies and fire starting gear from a lighter to matches and a magnesium fire starter. {Got all the angles on that one }
Got Saddlebags for extra storage. A waist bag attached to the bike for small stuff. And I have a dufflebag for the rear rack with TONS of storage. And with the Sleeping bag attached to the top of that it gives me a nice backrest.
Was thinking of using a milk crate, but its exposed and does not offer storage like the duffle. I just need to get something like a thick plastic board for support so it does not sink down and cover my brake light.
Going to do a small mod of my own, a ramp for the solar charger attatched to my left mirror so that while I ride it gets a full charge. It also supports charging via the wall so thats a plus if I really need it.
Going to buy Clothing suited to durability as I will be wearing them alot and I dont want problems a couple days into the trip.
Was going to ask if anyone is between Florida and Michigan if they would not mind me either crashing on a couch for a night or setting up my tent in there back yard. That would be awesome and give me a place to sleep instead of "hiding" or looking for a camp site and possible having to pay.

If you can, get a bag of dryer lint. Great for starting camp fires.

So in a couple weeks I am going to use my vacation time to ride out about 200 miles out or so and camp for a couple days, and see how it works out. If I need to change anything and how the bike handles with all the gear.

Keep the gear as low as possible on the bike. This will help keep the CG low and help performance with riding.

1 last update before camping trip.
On the 20th I will be going on a camping trip to test the gear. How it handles. If I can stand carrying the bag on my back for extended periods of time. Etc.
I got all my gear in order.
Bike running right Tent Sleeping Bag Cooking supply's Tarp Fire starter Lamp Radio Knife Tools Water Purifier Water Containers Few Spare Parts Ducted Tape Zip Ties and a few other odds and ends.
Had a scary moment yesterday when I went to Home Depot. I was leaving and while in there parking lot I hit a nasty pothole. It bent my rim on both sides and I nearly had a blowout.
The rim is now fixed and ready to go. So now is just the waiting game
The point in this camping trip is for testing and bike review. Will it handle the ride? Or will it die on me.

Wow Sparky. You need to keep a "minimum" of 36 lbs of air pressure in those tires to keep your rim from bottoming out. Especially if you're going to be traveling a long distance. Those tires are pretty durable, you must've been low on air pressure for this to happen.

I hit the pothole HARD and yeah, those tires are great. Got home without a blowout and fixed it, this is the repair.

As of today the scooter trip of any kind is officially canceled. I was in a collision with a pickup today totaling the bike into a thousand pieces.

Cop did not write a citation because its a county line road and the police fight over juristiction. Even though on the report it say's the correct officer showed up.
